Job Title:                                      Cook For MSF STAFF MEMBERS

Duty Station:                               Homa Bay Town

Length of Contract:                     One Year Contract with a Probationary Period of Three Months

 

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization providing assistance to people affected by armed conflicts, epidemics, natural or non-natural disasters, or persons excluded from access to health care. The organization has health projects in more than 70 countries.

 

MSF France has had a significance presence in Kenya since 1996. In Homa Bay, MSF France supports the HBCTRH in the adult medical (in-patient and TB) wards to improve management of adults’ patients hospitalized, as well as managing chronic disease activities in 2 decentralized sites.

 

MSF France in Homa Bay is looking to fill the position of a ‘COOK.’ The successful candidate report to the to the Administration Manager.

 

Main purpose of the Position:

 

The cook prepares meals for MSF staff members and all visitors who are requesting, according to hygiene standards and security rules, in order to ensure their nutritional needs.

 

Tasks & Responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

·        Meal preparation, grocery shopping, kitchen cleaning, and menu planning.

·        Carry out the preparation of meals for staff and ensure that they are served on time for lunch: 1pm

·        Collect food box money from individual expats and stock enough food.

·        Ensure you always follow all hygiene standards and security rules.

·        If (when) applicable set table before every meal and clean it up after each meal.

·        Ensure the provision of clean drinking water during the day and when she/he leaves cleaning, filling the filter and empty bottles, changing batteries - if necessary.

·        Keep an inventory of MSF kitchen utensils and equipment, i.e. plates, glasses, cutlery, cookware, etc., and ensure its integrity.

·        Take care of all equipment provided; report all important information (losses, theft, damages, deterioration, incident, etc.) to the Administration manager on time.

·        Request for required utensils and kitchen items. Ensure you report any broken items to the supervisor/Admin.

·        Regular cleaning of fridges/ freezers and stock cardboards once a week, the water dispenser, microwave and cooker daily.

·        Wash utensils after breakfast, after lunch and before leaving the premises.

·        Close and lock the IMS Guest Houses before leaving the premises.

·        Report all important information (lost, robbery, damages, deterioration, incident, etc.) - to the Admin Manager. 

·        Prepare and set the table for the dinner (at the IMS Guest House), at 17h00 – before leaving the premises.

·        Ensure cleanliness of all kitchen facilities, utensils and equipment.

·        Control stock of food so as to ask for anything needed on time and prepare shopping list and make purchases, if required.

·        Ensure the provision of clean drinking water during the day and when she/he leaves cleaning,

 

Obligations:

·        To report on any aspects that threaten or favour the program

·        To abide by the MSF Staff regulations and MSF Charter

·        To maintain confidentiality with respect to MSF’S Operational and patient activities and internal information pertaining to budgets,strategies, etc.

 

 

Qualifications & Requirements:                                                                                                                                            

 

Education

 

·        Essential: Certificate in catering or its equivalent.

 

 

Knowledge & Experience

 

Essential

 

·        Desirable: at least 2 years of previous experience in a similar capacity. Cuisine proficiency, includes  African, international, and vegetarian cuisines.

 

·        Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s is desirable.

 

 

Languages

·         Essential: Mission language/ English and Kiswahili

 

 

Competencies

·        Results oriented, team player, flexibility, commitment, service oriented.
