Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization providing assistance to people affected by armed conflicts, epidemics, natural or non-natural disasters, or persons excluded from access to health care. The organization has health projects in more than 70 countries.

 

MSF France has had a significant presence in Kenya since 1996. In Mathare Lavender House Clinic, MSF runs a 24-hour SGBV Clinic for victims of sexual and gender-based violence and an emergency program that provides pre-hospital care and trauma/medical stabilization. We also have a clinic in Dandora offering youth-friendly services to those between the ages of 10 to 24 years. All our services are free including a toll-free hotline.

 

MSF France Mathare project is looking to fill the position of a Counselor Educator. The successful candidate reports to the Mental Health Supervisor.

 

Objective of the Position:

 

The purpose of the Counselor Educator is to conduct best practice counseling, education, aware and sensitization sessions. Always ensuring adherence to MSF principles and code of conduct to enhance mental wellbeing and psycho-social circumstances of beneficiaries.

 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

        Through initial assessment, Identify and provide psychosocial support for patients based on their needs.   

        Actively promote the availability of counselling services and carry out, individual or group counseling, psycho educational sessions, to patients, their families (when needed), to alleviate their psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.

        Ensure collaborative work alongside MSF clinic team. Make timely and appropriate referrals to ensure beneficiaries receive best practice care.

        Participate in the creation of any material needed for counseling activities and respectfully maintain and store all equipment.

        Maintain professional documentation and note keeping. Record all activities and maintain an updated client database.

        Commitment to regular supervision to ensure best practice and clinical review of patients. Seeking support on complex cases from peers and clinical supervisor to ensure risk mitigation.

        Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in accordance with practice code of conduct guidelines.

        Maintain an open line of communication and feedback, alerting clinical supervisor of any difficulties or risk related to daily activities in a timely manner. 

        Proactively engage in trainings identified as useful to enhance your practice.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

 

Education:

Essential Counselling or educational psychology degree/diploma

Experience:

Essential 1 year experience.

Desirable previous experience with humanitarian and MH NGO.

 

Languages:

Fluency in English and Kiswahili is a must; other local language is a plus

Competencies/Skills:

 

Evidence based clinical assessment and treatment outcomes and quality orientation

Consistent commitment to ethical and professional practice in accordance with professional scope and MSF codes of conduct

Behavioral Flexibility

Adherence to MSF principles and evolving mission directives

Stress Management and ownership of self-care
